Questions and Answers

Why didn't I receive an activation email after registering?

An activation email is sent to you automatically when you register for access to the ECWS members areas of this web site. This is done to confirm that you have registered with a legitimate email address, and it also helps to reduce spam on the site.

The providers of some email services, especially the free ones like Hotmail and Yahoo, sometimes filter out automatically generated email messages as a counter-spam measure. Yahoo also handles BTinternet, BTopenworld and Talk21 addresses, so these can be affected too.

If you are using these free services you may not receive the activation email, and you won't be able to reset your password by email either. Nor will you be able to receive notifications of new forum posts in topics that you are subscribed to. The best way to avoid this issue is to add admin@ecws.org.uk to your friends list.

The web site administrator can perform the activation for you, and can also assign a new temporary password if you have forgotten yours. Please request either of these services by sending an email message to admin@ecws.org.uk.

Why can't I login?

You need to have registered on this web site as a member of either the Roundhead Association or the King's Army (you can find the registration form by clicking here). You must enter your username and password exactly as you entered them when you registered (Smith123 is NOT the same as SMITH123 or smith123).

If you have forgotten your password you can ask for a reminder to be sent to your registered email address automatically by clicking on the Password Reminder link in the login Security Panel. However, this may not work for some free email addresses such as Hotmail, Yahoo, BTinternet and Talk21. These addresses often block messages that are generated automatically from web sites because of concerns about spam. In this case please contact the web site administrator and ask for a new, temporary password.

I am using AOL's web browser - why can't I login?
It seems that AOL 'loses' your login details every time you view a different page. So, when you enter your login details and click the login button you are taken to a new page and thereby AOL promptly causes you to be logged out. You will not have access to the ECWS member pages that you are supposed to be able to see. A quick fix for this is to make sure that the Remember Me box is checked at the same time as you enter your username and password. This will keep you permanently logged in while you are viewing the ECWS website. A better solution is to use a different web browser.
How do I know I am logged in, and how do I log out?

You can only login if you have registered, and registrations are only accepted from English Civil War Society members.

A login panel becomes available when you click on the Login link on the top menu bar. When you are logged in the panel changes to show your name and a Logout button, and this shows that you are currently logged in. This panel is visible on many of the pages where space allows.

Another clue about whether you are logged in or not is that there is a Members Menu displayed on many of the pages which is not visible unless you are logged in.

How do I cancel my registration?

You can't cancel your own registration but a website sdministrator can do it for you. Simply send your request in an email to admin@ecws.org.uk. It would be supportive to us if your email included the reason for your request.

However, please note the following conditions, which may apply to you, and which will come into force without you needing to do anything at all to cancel your registration:

  1. A check of registrations against current Army membership lists will be made every year during October/November. Any registrations that are found to be invalid (not KA or RA members at that time) will be deleted.
  2. An annual check will be made during the same period (October/November) to review registrations that are not active, i.e., KA and RA members who have not accessed the website during the preceding year.
